UGC vs Influencer Marketing

UGC marketing and influencer marketing differ in what the brand buys. With UGC, the brand pays a creator for content assets it publishes on its own channels and ad accounts; the creator's audience is irrelevant. With influencer marketing, the brand pays for distribution: the creator posts to their own followers, so reach, trust, and engagement set the price. Many campaigns combine both.

The difference is what the brand buys

The two get conflated because both involve paying creators to make content about your product. The transaction is different. In a UGC deal, the brand hires a creator to produce customer-style photos or videos and deliver the files. The brand then publishes them on its own social accounts, product pages, emails, or paid ad accounts. The creator does not post anything. Shopify's UGC guide frames it as buying a raw asset. In an influencer deal, the brand pays for the post itself: the creator publishes to their own audience, and the brand is buying reach, trust, and the association with that creator. Shopify puts it bluntly: with influencers, the follower count is the product. Content quality matters in both, but only influencer marketing includes built-in distribution.

Side-by-side comparison

Use this table when scoping a campaign. Every row traces back to the same root difference: asset versus audience.

Whitelisting blurs the line: influencer content promoted as paid media through the creator's handle. See the whitelisting page for how that deal is structured.

What each costs

UGC is priced per deliverable, not per follower. In Influencer Marketing Hub's benchmark survey, roughly 80% of reported UGC creator costs came in under $500, with most of the remainder between $500 and $2,000. Shopify's UGC guide cites Collabstr data putting the average paid UGC collaboration around $202. Usage terms move the price: longer paid-ad windows and exclusivity cost more than the base creation fee. Influencer pricing has no single benchmark because the fee tracks audience size, engagement, platform, and format; a nano creator's post and a celebrity's post are different products. Demand for the content side keeps growing: in the same benchmark survey, 50% of brands said they plan to increase their use of UGC creators and none planned to cut it.

Usage rights and disclosure

In a UGC deal, ownership terms live in the contract, so get them in writing before production: which channels, paid or organic, for how long, and whether the creator can make similar work for competitors. Shopify's guide notes that rights to run creator content as paid ads are typically priced on top of the base creation fee, and that reposting a customer's photo requires explicit permission, since customers own their images even when they tag the brand. In influencer deals, the creator owns the post by default; running it as paid media requires negotiated usage rights, whether from brand accounts or through the creator's handle via whitelisting. Disclosure is not optional on the influencer side: the FTC requires creators to clearly disclose any material connection with a brand, including payment, free product, or discounts, placed in the post where viewers will see it.

When to use which, and when to combine

Buy UGC when you need ad creative to test, social proof on product pages, or more content for a brand account. Buy influencer marketing when you need distribution through an audience you do not have. Many programs use both: influencer posts create reach, then the strongest content is licensed and recut for paid ads. Price UGC against your current creative-production costs and influencer work against your paid-media costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is UGC cheaper than influencer marketing?

Usually per asset, yes. Roughly 80% of UGC creator fees reported in Influencer Marketing Hub's benchmark survey came in under $500 on freelance marketplaces. But UGC includes no distribution, so compare total cost: the content fee plus the paid media spend needed to put it in front of people.

Do UGC creators need followers?

No. UGC creators are hired for the content itself, which the brand publishes on its own channels and ad accounts. Follower count does not affect the deliverable or, in most deals, the price. Influencer fees, by contrast, are priced on audience size and engagement.

Can a brand run influencer content as paid ads?

Only with negotiated usage rights. The creator owns their post by default. Brands either license the content for their own ad accounts or run ads through the creator's handle, called whitelisting. Both are negotiated on top of the posting fee.

Does UGC need FTC disclosure?

It depends on who publishes it. When a brand runs paid UGC from its own accounts, it is labeled brand advertising. When a creator with any material connection to the brand posts about the product, the FTC requires a clear disclosure in the post itself, regardless of follower count.

What does UGC stand for?

User-generated content: photos, videos, and reviews made by customers or hired creators in a customer style, rather than by the brand's in-house team. In practice, marketers use the term for both organic customer content and paid creator content made for brand channels.
